Driver Escaped Before Linfield Train Hit

LINFIELD PA – The name and home address of a 50-year-old South Carolina driver, whose automobile was struck and mangled Tuesday night (Jan. 26, 2016) by a Norfolk Southern freight train on tracks crossing Railroad Street, are being withheld until blood test results verify if he was intoxicated at the time, Limerick police reported.

Township officers, in a post on the police department’s Facebook page, said the driver escaped, successfully “able to exit the vehicle before it was struck.” They did not report what, if any, injuries he sustained. The car, however, incurred significant damage as evidenced in a photo (above) that accompanied the department status update.

“There was minimal damage to the train, and no leakage or damage to the cargo or tracks,” police added. Linfield Fire Company volunteers responded to the scene.

Blood tests were conducted, police said, because the individual is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
